The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 14 - 18, 1959



Saturday, November 14, 1959

Cloudy except rain in a.m. Very warm all day and evening. Blanche and I to Portland. I done some Christmas shopping for Mama. Blanche bought shoes. Betty up to Carsley’s in day and at night to babysit. Billie up to Chet’s in p.m. to work. Bill over to Jim’s all day.



Sunday, November 15, 1959

Fair, colder. I cooked. Cleaned up the upstairs. Bill worked over to Jim’s in a.m., up to Bill Ridlons in p.m. Billie up to Chet’s all day. Betty home all day.



Monday, November 16, 1959 LETTER from D.

Cold and rain. I washed and churned. Letter from Dorothea. She is coming home next Saturday. Anxious to see she and Jeff. Hayd called in evening. Betty home all evening.



Tuesday, November 17, 1959

Rained all day. I done general work. Betty decorated dining room tonight and made the birthday cake. Raymond called in evening. Dolores called this morning. I was late getting my work done.



Wednesday, November 18, 1959 Dawn Parks and Charles Weymouth’s birthday’s

Cold today but not raining. Got ready for the party. We had a surprise birthday party for Dawn. Betty did it all herself. She done a nice job. Mabel Nevers, Larry and Ellen Nevers, and Susan Nevers. George, Steve and Dawn, the family here. It was nice, all had a nice time. I ironed today.
