The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3 - 5, 1985

 

Monday, June 3, 1985 $387, $168

 

A very nice day, it got very hot. The checks came today. I went down to the bank with Dorothea. George, Carmen, Betty Smith went to the hospital to see Bill. Then they went to Old Orchard. Dorothea and George. I did the washing. They examined the condition of his liver. Dorothea and George went to Old Orchard.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 4, 1985

 

Partly cloudy. I done up the work, made a pie. Got their lunch. Carmen here, she didn’t go to Portland, going Sunday because she and John both have to work today. Dorothea and George gone to the hospital. Billie and Carmen painted. She the barn, he the fence. She is some depressed.

 

 


 

Wednesday, June 5, 1985

 

Cloudy all day, some rain and a dite of sun. I done a lot today. I did regular work. I defrosted refrigerator, I cleaned the stove, oven and a big ironing. Billie and I down to mail some letters and put some more money in checking account. Carmen, Kim had supper at Betty’s, also George. Zack and Betty came up. No one went to see Bill today. They were going to give him an examination to see how he is inside etc. Scribner brought the box or bed for the back porch. It is going to be very nice.
