The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 18 - 20, 1985 Poppa Deathly Ill

Saturday, May 18, 1985 Eddie’s graduation

This morning Kim and Eddie called on their way to the graduation. They looked very nice. Eddie in his suit. Kim in her dainty little dress. Zack up for breakfast. Carmen called all dolled up, she too had a beautiful dress on. She and Zack are going to the graduation together. I did up the housework, dusted, vacuumed etc. I did a big ironing. Made a grapefruit pudding, baked beans, put away some of the cleaning cloths etc.

Sunday, May 19, 1985 BILL Very Very Sick, Serious

I did up the work. I went up to see Fern with Milan and Betty. When we got home Carmen was here painting. Bill was in bed not feeling very good. I got supper. Bill got worse. He began to throw up blood. He threw up about 2 quarts of blood and clots. Betty and Walt was away. We called Dorothea. She came and she and Carmen got him right to the hospital. His condition was called very critical. He had a heart problem also. They could not stop the bleeding. Finally decided he better go right to Portland so he was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. Dorothea, Betty, Carmen and I went also. He was much worse. Didn’t give us any hope at all.

Monday, May 20, 1985 HEIDI

At 2 PM Dr. came and put her to sleep. I loved her so much and she did me and all of us. It was one of the hardest things I ever did as I called for them to come she did not want to leave. She was sick with a bad problem. I will never forget her.

We got home from Portland at 4:30 AM. Slept a few hours then I done up the work. Did a big wash. Picked some dandelions. Milan and Betty came. The greens were delicious for supper. Dorothea, Betty, Carmen and Kim to Portland to see Bill. Still in critical condition. We called George. He may come a, little sooner if possible. Carmen up and Betty. Also Kim and Eddie. They have made different plans for Eddie to leave early for California. He loves Kim above everyone. He is a nice bright smart young man with ambition. Milan and Betty came and got some greens. I miss Heidi.
