The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 30 - July 3, 1985

 

Sunday, June 30, 1985

 

A nice day. Hot in early a.m. I defrosted refrigerator. Also cleaned oven electric stove. Billie did the garden. Betty, Walt called, we did some more papers.

 

 

 

Monday, July 1, 1985

 

A very nice sunny day. Hot. Bill and I with Betty down to have some official papers notarized by notary Republic. Came home, finished my washing. Picked greens. Betty did shopping for me. Joy called today. Carmen Kim up for lunch. Billie been busy all day, got the mowing machine on the tractor. It took them all afternoon. It was too much for him. Bill not very good, he has heart problems.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 2, 1985 Billie got strawberries picked

 

I been busy all day. I done regular work. Washed all the windows, some other odd jobs. Betty called today, also Carmen and Kim.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 3, 1985

 

A quite hot and humid day. I did a wash. Bill down to the hospital to be checked over. He is still bleeding some. Dorothea called here, Dot was with her. She is looking quite good. I was glad to see her. Dorothea got me some groceries today. They had fireworks downtown tonight. I froze strawberries today.
