The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 26, 1985

Sunday, June 23, 1985

A nice day. George got home today, 8 AM our time. 2 PM their time. We miss him. I went up to see Fern with Milan and Betty. Zack got a job at Camp Encore Coda. Billie up to Vermont with David.

Monday, June 24, 1985 Zack to work on a job at Camp Encore Coda, Bad Showers

We had bad thundershowers today and hailstones. I did the wash. Made a salad for supper. Vince Boynton called today. Zack had to come home at noon to go to dentist. He was pleased to get a job. I hope all goes well, he will like and they will like him. He is such a good boy. Bill not very good. He don’t improve any as I can see. I defrosted the refrigerator on the breezeway.

Tuesday, June 25, 1985 BILL BACK TO MERCY HOSPITAL

Cloudy. I got up early, got the breakfast, done up the regular work. Bill said he was bleeding again. He went to see Betty about taking him to the hospital. He is bleeding again and it is serious because the blood is bright red in color. He did not come home, probably will last of the week. We had our first mess of Swiss chard tonight. Dorothea called, also Milan and Betty. And Walt called today to see how Bill was.

Wednesday, June 26, 1985 cloudy again

I done up my work and got ready to go to the hospital with Dorothea to see Bill. He is just the same. He may come home tomorrow. I got some chicken Kentucky Fried to take home, it wasn’t too good. It has been such a miserable day.
