The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 4 - 7, 1985 4th of July Cookout - breaking the picnic table seat!

A very nice hot sunny day all day. I got up usual time, got breakfast and done up regular work. Made a batch of brownies. Made a potato salad, took a bath. Milan and Betty came, we got ready and went up to the camp. Carmen came. She went down and helped Betty to prepare food for the cookout. We got up there by 11 o’clock. They had the fires going. We talked and visited then they got the food cooking. We ate then later Joy, Cindy and a friend came. Later Dorothea, Fern and Kay then Kim later. Jay, Debbie and girls came. Had a very good meal, all enjoyed the lake very much. Susan called this evening. She graduated from the beauty school yesterday. She is so pleased. She did very well.

A nice sunny day, on the hot side. Bill gone down to the Dr. or hospital in town for blood count. Milan gone to Portland for his treatment, first day of it. I been busy at the desk all day making out the bills etc. I got Swiss chard greens for supper. No cooking. I don’t cook anymore. Betty took Zack down for a hair cut after work. They didn’t do too much today.

Hot and humid. I did regular work, vacuum then washed floors. Billie working on the fence. Bill down town this morning. David home this morning for a week. I hope you will get his haying done. Not too good a day. We had some rain showers. Zack didn’t have to work at camp. He helped Billie and Carmen put the fence up.

Hot and humid. Got the work done up. About 11:30 Betty’s folks called, wanted to know if we wanted to go up to camp for a cookout. The table broke. What a laugh. Billie, Walt and Betty all broke down. A small boy was raped out by the bridge. Billie helped the lady and guys. Carmen took Zack across the lake to Camp Coda to get his bike. She almost not made it getting back in the canoe. From Encore Coda, was helping to get police etc.
