The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 25 - 28, 1966



Wednesday, May 25, 1966

A beautiful day. I cleaned the bathroom and Billie’s room and did a wash. Joy and Laurie called. Carmen here all day. She stayed here again last night. Betty worked from Mrs. Hansen. We have had such a nice week, 70 to 80° all week so far. Billie mowed.



Thursday, May 26, 1966

Another very nice pleasant day. Sunny and warm. I cleaned the living room. Joy, Lori, Betty, Carmen and Kimberly here. Betty got her check $110. She paid her light bill, rent money, bought some groceries etc. Billie and I took them home after supper then we called at Sals and Gordon’s. Came home, I got the dining room picked up and ready to cleaned in the morning. Talked with Fern and Betty. Carmen all swollen with fly bites. Billie mowed lawns. Delores called.



Friday, May 27, 1966 No word from Dorothea

Another nice hot sunny day. I cleaned up my dining room and defrosted and cleaned my refrigerator. Betty and children up, we went to town. I did my grocery shopping. Called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Billie put the pigs out tonight. He and Bill mowed lawns here and up to trailer. Mike over to see Betty and his girls. He was HOT, abused Betty and she had to call the cops. They took Mike away. He had a new car. He is a bum.



Saturday, May 28, 1966

A cloudy day. I done up regular work. Billie worked for Lawrence and Chet. Bill did some odds and end jobs, stains dining room chairs. Carmen here all night. Betty and Kimberly here for supper. Betty HATES Mike. I wish a miracle could happen. No word from Dorothea.
