The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 1 - 4, 1966

Monday, August 1, 1966

A beautiful day. Hot. We got the wash done in good season but had to wait to get it hung out. We had so much. Betty to town with the car, got oil changed. She saw Mike. Betty did the ironing before she went home. Measured well at the trailer, about 8 feet.

A nice day, hot. Betty got up here about 11. She prepared a picnic. Mike was supposed to go but didn’t. Betty and kids went on a picnic down in the woods. Had a good time. Dorothea took her license over to Stanley Allen to be sent in for the car. We called at Betty’s and Fern’s. I made a cake today. I cleaned up the house.

Cleared off after a rainy night. A beautiful day, on the cool windy side. Betty brought her kids up today. I didn’t do much. Wrote to Esther. Mike stayed at Betty’s. She said he is on the uneasy side, wants to get out with that awful gang again. Betty is trying to see if she can get him to settle down and act his part as a MAN with a family. I’m afraid it will be useless. He needs some professional help. A lady called here from Arkansas.

Betty up today. Carmen don’t feel very good. Dorothea had the afternoon off. I checked over things in my desk.
