The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1966

Sunday, June 26, 1966

HOT HOT. A long long long hot day. Didn’t do much until in p.m. Took a ride, ate out. Came home. Dorothea came home, got ready, went down to the funeral parlor.

Monday, June 27, 1966

Not quite so hot today. We went to town and around. Dennis and Freddie called. They called to see if they hadn’t better take Jeff over to see his grandfather today. Dorothea got him a new suit (blue) and a new pair of shoes. He sure looked swell when he got all dressed up. Really nice looking. Dorothea said she and Denny was so proud of him. All the family thought he was a nice boy. Letter from Aunt Ava.

Cloudy but a big relief. Dennis’s father was buried today. She and Dennis gone all the day and until late in the night. Dorothea washed in a.m. Jeff and I puttered around, he made a fort out in the backyard and ate his supper out there.

Wednesday, June 29, 1966

Another hot day. Dorothea home until after supper. Then she went over to Dennis’s mother’s to sit with the family. She and Dennis discussed some things in regards to his mother’s situation etc. Dorothea told me she is not going home with me. Dorothea’s car wouldn’t start so she had to have a man come from the garage. He has to do some more work on it. We had our hair done today at the beauty school. She bought some groceries.
