The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 5 - 8, 1966 Celebrating Nanny's 56th Birthday



Friday, August 5, 1966

Carmen sick. They didn’t sleep last night. Mike up to Betty’s, he went out looking for a job. No luck. He has left and gone back to Auburn now. I guess he has gone out of Betty, Carmen and Kimberly’s life at last. Betty and children didn’t come up today. I called on them.



Saturday, August 6, 1966

A beautiful day. I done up my work, had beans, brown bread and rolls. Betty and I to town. Carmen real sick. Betty took her to the doctors. Enlarged tonsils, weak eyes and infection in the ear. They went home early. Kimberly stayed up here tonight.



Sunday, August 7, 1966

A beautiful day. We was more or less busy all day and at night they honored me with my 56th birthday. I got money, under clothes, candy, powder and perfume. Had a beautiful cake and ice cream. Fern, Lloyd besides the family was here. Dorothea brought home turkey today.



August 8, 1966 56

Another nice sunny day. We washed, clothes dried good. We, Betty, children and I went to Norway. Came home, got supper. Dorothea up in PM, brought some corn on the cob and other goodies. Betty and children home early, the kids don’t feel well. Bill called Mr. Doucette. He will call us back tomorrow night to let us know whether they take the place or not. Kennie and Dot called. Tonie not very good today.
