The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 8 - 11, 1966 FINALLY Starting for HOME

Friday, July 8, 1966

Nice day. Did a lot of packing today. Dorothea washed all day. She sold quite a lot today. Mickey and his wife over in evening and Mickey took the rug up. A nice cool day. Edna called and Jimmy. He stayed and played with Jeff. The kitchen set went today. All we have for chairs is one stool.

Saturday, July 9, 1966

Not very hot. A real comfortable day, did some more packing. Dorothea sold some more things, beds are all gone. We expected Dennis to come get Jeff. Had a bad shower and a lot of rain. Went out, had a nice supper, came home. Freddy came. We went out looking at U-Haul trailers. Came home. Freddy stopped a while. After he went we went to bed on the floor. Mickey here and finished taking the rug up. He and Dorothea took some things over to Mrs. Adair’s she bought.

Sunday, July 10, 1966 Hot

Hot weather has come again. Up about eight, got ready, went out had breakfast. Came home. I did some more packing or finished. Dorothea called at Alice’s and at Mickey’s. She washed today. What a hard bed last night. Dorothea sold all the rest of her things today.

Monday, July 11, 1966 Going to Start for HOME

Another hot day. We went all around and everywhere doing errands. Had so many many things to do the last minute. We got done about 2 o’clock. Went back home, hitched that trailer on and got away about 3:30. Soon after we got on the road, the exhaust on the car went. Had to drive out to a garage to get that fixed. The man told us we had such a load it would break the springs. We sure dread this trip.
