The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 2 - 5, 1966



Thursday, June 2, 1966

A very nice day. I finished my housecleaning. Did the grain room and play pen. I took care of Kimberly. Betty and Carmen to Portland with Joy. Bill and I called at Ferns after taking Betty and children home.



Friday, June 3, 1966 Ate on Porch



A beautiful day, 70° temperature. I done up my work. Mr. Scribner looked at the house. Fern, Lloyd called. I did a wash. I cleaned up the upstairs. Betty and children came, we went to town. Joy and children here. We had Fern up for supper. Scallops, french fries, salad. Ate on porch for first time. Betty got a letter and call from Mike today.




Saturday, June 4, 1966

A very nice HOT day. I done up my work. Billie and I went up to Sweden and got plants for flower boxes, tomato plants. Bill got Gordon’s truck, hauled loam up to trailer. Also mowed lawns up there with a rotary mower. Billie, Betty and I cleaned Billie’s car. Betty and I cleaned our car. Fern up. They began working at Lloyd’s today.



Sunday, June 5, 1966

A very nice sunny day. I done up the work. Betty came up, we did a big wash. Kennie, Dot came. Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Billie out with Lawrence looking for cattle. Joy and girls called. Sent out the DAHLIAS. Holly got her chairs she bought of Ferns. I got a couple tables today from Fern. They are our grandmothers furniture. I like them so much.
