The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 24 - 27, 1966



Sunday, July 24, 1966

HOT. We took the windows off porch and put the screens on. Bill worked at Lloyd’s all day helping him put up eve spouts. Mr. Doucette and his son came to see the house. Mowed lawns, cooked a nice roast of pork. Kennie and Dot called.



Monday, July 25, 1966

HOT. Two weeks ago tonight we were on our way home from Michigan. It has been so awful awful hot. We done an awful big wash. Betty and the girls up here all night last night. Dorothea got a job today. It is a temporary one but it will give her a chance to get a good one as she wants. Young Mr. Doucette came to see about the place tonight. Jean came up for a little while. She went down to see Fern’s house. Billie, Dorothea, Jeff and I called on Fern. A bite on trailer.



Tuesday, July 26, 1966

A beautiful day. I done up my work. Betty came up. She and I with the kids went to Norway. She did a dite of shopping. Bought me a watch. Mike called on Betty last night. Dorothea began work at Camp Woodlands.



Wednesday, July 27, 1966

A beautiful day. Clear and not too hot. I done up regular work. Delores up. I took care of the Boutilier girls today. I wrote to Esther today. Mike gave Betty some money.
