The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 30 - July 3, 1966

Thursday, June 30, 1966

Today I am beginning to make plans to go home. I don’t know for sure if Dorothea and Jeff will go with me or not. Dorothea, Jeff and I rode all over yesterday, way to Royal Oak, back to (blank) and came home. Had supper then over to Dennis’s folks. Dennis wasn’t there. Letter from Betty. A good newsy one. Margaret called here in evening.

Friday, July 1, 1966 HOT

Another one of those awful hot days. Dorothea washed over to Alice’s house. To phone Sandy to see how Dennis was. Couldn’t get anyone, came home. Alice and two girls came and spent all afternoon. Dorothea called at Edna’s. Then after supper she and I over to Alice’s again. She called the Adair’s. Dennis answer. He couldn’t get over today or tomorrow, maybe tomorrow evening. She has gone out to do a little spying. She should go home with me. I hope she does.

Saturday, July 2, 1966 HOT

I never see such hot weather as they have out here. Went to the bank with Dorothea. Came home, sat out in backyard. Then went to Alice’s to call to see about sending lawn mower and swimming pool. Called at Edna’s and she called Airport from there. Came home, had supper. Dorothea waited for a call from Dennis. No call or phone or at house.

Another awful hot day. Dorothea unpacked and we settle things back as Dennis had promised again last night he would be back. She was so glad to get settled last night but yet she wondered. All day and no Dennis and into the evening. Margaret called, she and Dorothea went out spying. Dennis’s car, they found it over to his girlfriends. They went to Mrs. Adair’s and there she found out Mrs. Adair was through with Dennis because he had been to see that woman and sent him out bag and baggage. So Dorothea came back and said she was going to Maine with me.
