The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1966



Monday, June 6, 1966 HOT 70 - 75 and 80

A very nice hot day. I done up my regular work. Got ready, Betty, Carmen and I to Portland to shop for a few things for me to go out to Ohio and Michigan. We had a good time. Joy and Betty bought me a very pretty dress. I got a new pair of corselet pants and a pocketbook. They did a lot of work at Lloyd’s today. I’ve made my reservations for early flight. Having a bad shower right now 8:30 PM. Called at Ferns in evening.



Tuesday, June 7, 1966 HOT

Fair, nice day, some clouds and some thunder showers in late p.m. Hot. I varnished the living room and dining room rugs. Also in bathroom, Billie’s and my room. I cleaned up the house. Wiped up the floors. Cardosi came and bought some of my antiques. $33. Carmen up here to stay all night but got sick from her shot and had to go home. Betty took them to the doctors. Both are of good health. I cleaned my front porch. Scribner took this house to sell. Called at Ferns in evening. They worked at Lloyd’s.



Wednesday, June 8, 1966

A nice day. I did a big wash. I ironed after supper. I did a lot of other things. Carmen here. Mike called, brought her up. He went fishing. Called at Ferns in evening.



Thursday, June 9, 1960 1/2 House Came

A nice day. I cleaned pots, pans, many last-minute chores. Betty and kids up. We went to town. One half Lloyd’s house came today. We went down to see it. I done a few errands. Mike got a job at John Briggs. Betty is so happy about Mike.
