The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 20 - 23, 1966



Wednesday, July 20, 1966

A nice day. I had Betty’s girls last night and today. Made a Turkey pie for supper. I worked at the trailer today. We finished it after supper. Went to town with Dorothea. Betty up to Mrs. Hansen’s to work. Jeff didn’t feel too good. Betty and Dorothea took Jeff and Carmen to the carnival. I stayed with Kimberly.



Thursday, July 21, 1966

A nice cool day. I washed, cleaned up the house. Washed windows in the kitchen. Had a picnic lunch down in the pasture. Betty, Dorothea, Jeff, Carmen and me. Called at Ferns. Came home, had supper. First mess of string beans. Dorothea down to Betty’s tonight. Billie and I picked two quarts strawberries. Kennard called in p.m. Dorothea called at Delores’s and Aunt Ava’s. Jeff didn’t feel too good.



Friday, July 22, 1966

I done up my regular work. Went to town, done my weekly shopping. Had fish for supper. Bill and I over to Harrison and paid insurance after supper.



Saturday, July 23, 1966

A nice day, had some good baked beans. Done up my regular work. Betty and kids up for supper. Fern here also. Jeff and Dorothea to Wesley’s birthday party. Betty and I to town in p.m.
