The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 22 - 25, 1966

Wednesday, June 22, 1966 HOT

A very hot hot humid day. We did many things today. Dorothea home, all done work. We packed and packed. She went down to the hospital tonight. Mr. Adair seems better. Jeff lame all day and in the house most all day. Tonight wrote a letter to the folks at home and many cards.

Thursday, June 23, 1966 HOT

Still very hot. Dorothea and I out shopping and doing other odd jobs. It is again very hot and humid. We cleaned furniture etc. today, getting ready to sell. Cleaned refrigerator, stove. She got ready about 4 PM to go out to meet Dennis. A man and his wife called with a Father in Law to see the house. Dennis was supposed to be here. Jeff and I outside all evening.

Friday, June 24, 1966 HOT

Didn’t get up until late because Dorothea was at the hospital all night with Dennis and his folks. We packed a few dishes. Went for a ride over to Mt. Clemmens. Dorothea showed me where Dennis’s folks lived. Came home. Dennis and Freddie here. Dennis don’t want Dorothea to sell or leave. He wants to come back. She flips when she sees him. She is so undecided now as to what to do. Audrey here in evening. Called on way home, had a teen burger, later had fish and chips, pizza.

Saturday, June 25, 1966 HOT

Dennis here about 8 AM, his father died last night about 11 PM. Dorothea feels bad, quite upset. Dorothea washed, cleaned the garage, breezeway. We did her bedroom, fixed Jeff’s room again. To the store in late p.m. Audrey called in p.m. Dorothea and Jeff may not go home with me. Letter from Esther today. They called again today to see about buying this house.
