The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 25 - 26, 1973 Christmas

Tuesday, December 25, 1973 CHRISTMAS, BIKE

A cloudy day. Up early, got ready and got breakfast and down to Betty’s. All had a nice Christmas. We got the dinner started there, when and while the Horton’s opened the gifts. KIM got her new BIKE and many other things or nice gifts. Zak got his new fire engine. It was fun and much enjoyment watching them unwrap their gifts. Fern, Lloyd, Dorothea, Dave, Bill, Billie and me were there. Gifts were nice and a lot of them. Dinner-Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnip, squash, shell beans, celery, cranberry sauce, pumpkin bread (made by Carmen), salad, rolls, coffee, rolls, lemon sponge, chocolate cream roll, date filled pie, whipped cream cake. Came home after supper and Billie and I took the tree out and cleaned up. Betty and Walt got cleaned up also. Dorothea and Dave went down to his father’s. They enjoyed being here as much as we did having them. Jeff is happy today at his father’s. We got the new table and chairs for the kitchen this year.

Santa came!

Rain in a.m., it cleared in p.m. Billie went down and helped Betty clean the hens. Also helped her clean the barn. I straightened out her kitchen and did a job or two for her. Marianne called at Betty’s. Carmen and Kim playing with their new dolls etc.
