The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 12 - 15, 1974

Saturday, January 12, 1974

A very nice day. Didn’t get up very early. I did a dite of cooking. Washed windows, made the beds all up clean. Worked all forenoon. In p.m. I finished reading the books and pamphlets of Betty’s that came from the LL Keen’s estate. Billie cleaned up the garage. Got milk and went with Lawrence.

Sunday, January 13, 1974 10 below when we got up

A very nice clear day but very cold. I washed, the clothes froze before I got them out of the basket. The Horton’s went to Westbrook and spent the day with the Thomases. Carmen stayed here. Esther and Cliff came over this p.m. to watch the games on TV. I had dinner at noon today. Carmen made some brownies and we made a couple batches of fudge. Billie called at Chet and Lil’s, Fern and Lloyd’s.

Monday, January 14, 1974 10 below zero

Very cold. I done up my work, got ready. Betty, Zak and I went to Portland. Zak stayed with Dorothea. Betty did a lot of grocery shopping. Got Kim a new ski suit. In evening Betty and Carmen called. I sewed buttons on Carmen’s coat. Then we went down to Fern’s in the brand-new truck. It was very nice.

Tuesday, January 15, 1974 40 above zero, Billie got a raise

Very mild early this morning and the wind was blowing 40 above. I done up my work. Went down to Betty’s. She took Zak to Humpty Dumpty school. Bill cleaned out the hens and the barn. It was a very mild day. Billie got a raise on his job today.
