The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1974 David Thomas Died

Tuesday, January 1, 1974 New Year’s Day, DAVE’S DAD DIED

New Year’s Day. It was our first storm of any amount. Anyway we got through November and December without any amount. What did come went away with rain and mild weather. The storm of today will no doubt stay. Today we had Esther and Cliff were here for all day and until evening. We had dinner. We all watched the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl parade, very pretty. In p.m. they watched ballgames. Betty called after supper. We called at Ferns. Today we got a phone call from Dorothea. Dave’s father died early this morning. Suddenly at home. We all feel sorry for David.

It dawned nice and sunny today. I done up my regular work. Betty called me to come down and stay with Zak while she went to Norway. I washed in PM.

Thursday, January 3, 1974 DAVID R THOMAS FUNERAL

It was a nice day. Done up regular work. In p.m. we went to Dave’s funeral. Walt, Betty, Bill and I. Bill was one of the bearers. Alton Bean, Milton Allen and Gordon Brill were the others. He had a lot of pretty flowers. It’s too bad for Kay. He was so kind to her and he was a young man.
