The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 17 - 20, 1973

Monday, December 17, 1973 SNOW AND RAIN, NO SCHOOL, Bill worked

The ground was white, about three or 4 inches of snow. It soon began to rain and it rained so hard. Very bad traveling. Schools were closed. This is the first snow of any depth. Kim up here today. I did some odds and end jobs. Kimmy had a good time up here. We had made our schedule for this week, because of the bad roads, we didn’t go to Portland.

Tuesday, December 18, 1973 Bill worked, VERY COLD, PERMANENT

Went to June’s and got my permanent. I’m so glad to get it done. It was a very cold day. I did my washing. Betty dried them in her dryer for me. Esther here in evening.

Wednesday, December 19, 1973 a beautiful day, Bill worked

We went to Portland to finish up the shopping. It was a very nice day but awful cold. Dorothea went in shopping. I did Billie’s shopping. Tonight Dorothea and family went up to Brunswick to hear a professional drummer play. It was very nice. Esther, Betty and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s in evening.

Thursday, December 20, 1973 Snow and Rain, Bill worked

It was cloudy and snowed some or very lightly. Then turned to rain and sleet which made it very bad traveling in late p.m. Today we fixed up a box of cake, candies and cookies for Bill (Walker) from Dorothea, Betty and me. Betty and I took them over. Walt took Betty’s car in to have tires put on. Billie up to get his haircut tonight, very bad traveling.
