The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 16 - 19, 1974 Poppa broke his leg

Wednesday, January 16, 1974

It has snowed all day, but it was one of those storms when it didn’t accumulate much. I worked on clippings for my scrapbooks. Watched TV programs. Bill worked at Betty’s on the room and plowed. Walt home early. Kids home late tonight, the bus had got stuck.

Thursday, January 17, 1974 20 below, very cold.

Bill hurt his leg today. He was clearing off the roof at Lloyd’s when he got down on the ground, he slipped and hurt his leg very much. I washed today.

Friday, January 18, 1974

Not so cold today, I done up my work. Bill took me down to Betty’s. He was very lame, but he got the truck started etc. I helped Betty while she done her chores etc. Then she took Fern and me to town to shop etc. Came home and took Bill to the doctors for an x-ray. He has a very thin break. Got to go on crutches and keep off his foot for two weeks. His leg pains him very much.

Saturday, January 19, 1974

A nice clear day. I done a lot of Saturday chores. Made a pie, washed kitchen floor, dusted, baked beans, made brown bread and rolls. Kim up here all day. Zak came up for supper. Billie called at Lloyd’s. Ken and Delores called. Bill’s foot swollen a lot today. He slept most of the day. Not too cold. Billie took me to town, got pills for Bill.
