The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 8 - 11, 1974

Tuesday, January 8, 1974

This is been a beautiful day. Sunny and clear, but on the cool side. There was a dite of wind too. I did a big wash. Down to Betty’s in early a.m. She took Zak to Humpty Dumpty school and Fern to get her hair done, a permanent at Frances Clayton’s. June fell and broke her wrist. Betty worked on her snapshots and got them all in the albums. She done such a very good job. Her children will appreciate them very much. Esther here in evening. She and I looked at them. Dorothea called and talked. Her teenage son is giving her a lot of side talk about quitting school etc. I hope he don’t. Or make it too hard for her. She is a little on the blue side.  Oh well it is the way life goes.

When we got up this morning it was cloudy and it began to snow soon. It snowed all day. I done regular work, cooked a good roast of beef, made a cake. Went down to Betty’s to stay with the kids, but she didn’t go to Portland so I came home. In evening I went with Betty and Carmen to sell Girl Scout cookies. Called at Delores’s, Esther’s and Fern’s, they all bought some cookies.

Friday, January 11, 1974 NEW TRUCK

A snowy mess when we got up this morning. There was school. I didn’t do much, read some of the booklets, went to town in p.m. with Betty. The last ride in the old car. It has been a very nice car and you could get a good ride in it. After supper they came up here and went to Ferns.
