The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 14 - 16, 1973 Fire Where Billie Worked

Monday, May 14, 1973

A fair day. Partly cloudy. Betty and I went to Dorothea’s then we went to the Maine Hardware and I bought the new rug for the living room floor. We did a few other things, got home quite early. Billie back to work and feeling fine. Esther took care of Zak today, he was very sick last night.

Tuesday, May 15, 1973

Today we, Fern, Esther and I worked at Betty’s fixing dandelion greens. Had some for supper, they were very good. In p.m. Betty and I cleaned her upstairs in the barn and Pa’s apartment. Bill worked downstairs. Betty, Walt and kids called in evening. Billie worked again today and is much better. It began to rain tonight. Kennard isn’t feeling too good, his leg is real bad.

Wednesday, May 16, 1973 FIRE WHERE BILLIE WORKED

Raining hard when we got up. It cleared about noon. I went down to Betty’s and she mowed her lawns for the first time. I cleaned her weekly cleaning. When Billie went to work this morning his place was all burned and destroyed by water and smoke. It burned in the night. Karen and her husband lived there in one of the apartments in that Brookside apartment. This has been a nice sunny day since it cleared off. TODAY BILL LEARNED JEAN HAD WILLED HIM A LOT OF LAND. It is the lot across from the old home. She has been dead one week today.
