The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 29 - 31,1973

Sunday, July 29, 1973 Dorothea 36

Today dawned a most beautiful sunny day. We got up about seven, had breakfast. Dorothea and Dave came for a little while. They were on their way to go up to North Stoneham on a picnic for the day with the Hortons and the Ed Babbitts. They had a very good time and the kids enjoyed it very much. We, Bill, George, Betty and I went down to Jack and Sylvia’s. We enjoyed a nice visit with them and looked at some old pictures of Jean’s. Came home, had a cookout steak supper.

Back to Nanny's for a cookout

Monday, July 30, 1973 HOT AND SUNNY

Up, got the work done early. I did my wash. Betty came and we went to Portland, Zayre’s and the Maine Mall. It looked very pretty. George and Betty enjoyed it very much. Betty treated us to dinner at the Deering Ice Cream Shop. Very good dinner. Came home and George’s slides had come back. Then after supper we went to town and came home and went down to Betty’s and helped she and Walt move hen  coops. Then they came up here and we saw the slides. Carmen and Kim had a good time, they went down to Dawn’s and Sebago Lake swimming. We picked them up when we came home. Zak was with Walt while we were at the Mall. At Walt’s office etc.

Judd wouldn't let us leave Dawn's

Tuesday, July 31, 1973 Carmen up today, grain box

I did some washing. Betty and George down to Sally and Gordon’s. It was cloudy when we got up but it cleared in late a.m. and was a very nice day. Betty got a grain box today from Chet. Kennard and Bill got it down for her. Kennard looks very bad, he is so thin. He can’t eat. He is going to doctors tomorrow. I did a lot of jobs today. Ironed also. Cleaned up the house. Carmen up today.
