The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 21 - 24, 1973

Thursday, June 21, 1973 HOT

A very nice day. I washed, done regular work. Betty and Zak called in evening. I went down to Fern’s while Billie got haircut and Lloyd. Billie took Betty’s screens off porch tonight.



Friday, June 22, 1973 HOT, Bill worked $50

It was partly cloudy. I done my work and went down to Betty’s. She mowed lawns and I done housework and washed for her. Betty helped on the barn some. I went to town in p.m. We got an awful rain shower tonight about suppertime. Billie Deming up to Brud’s for the weekend.



Saturday, June 23, 1973 picked strawberries, Bill worked at Walt’s, Walt worked too, Zak tractor

This is been a partly sunny and mostly hazy day. Bill and Walt worked on the barn. Billie did his grass trimming. We cleaned the cars, picked a few strawberries today. I baked beans, made bread and rolls. David here for supper. His car is down to the garage. He took Bill’s car home. They got the second floor on. Today Betty and I went to Fryeburg at Osgood Brothers and got Zak a new John Deere tractor and trailer toy. He is very pleased with it.





Sunday, June 24, 1973 Bill worked at Walt’s

Another hazy sunless day. I got my work done. Put a rinse on my hair, took my bath, did a wash. Bill and Walt worked in the barn. We ate down there. Fern, Lloyd, Es and Cliff called. Carmen and Kim to the movies tonight. Betty and Walt down to Dawn and Ed’s to call and ZAK up here staying with us. He is so pleased. Late in p.m. the sun appeared. Fern and Lloyd called. Fern saw the rug in new room for first time. Es, Cliff, Fern and Lloyd took a ride up in the mountains in New Hampshire.
