The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 26 - 28, 1973 A New Car for Dorothea and David

Thursday, July 26, 1973

A pretty good day, it got hot and humid. Done up the work, cleaned the house up. Kim up here all day. Betty took Mrs. Osborne to the airport. Fern stayed with Carmen and Zak. I made a pudding, cooked string beans.

Friday, July 27, 1973

Cloudy and showers this morning. I went down to Betty’s. We got ready and went down to Westbrook and she got another cat, black-and-white. Zak went but not Carmen and Kim. Also George, Betty and Bill went too. Came home, went shopping. Then after we got back from town I made custard, brownies and picked greens. Picked string beans for Betty. Got supper. I washed after supper. Billie cleaned lawn mower,  garage etc.

Saturday, July 28, 1973 beautiful day, Dorothea and Dave New Car

This morning we got ready and headed for Northern Western Maine. Billie took us for a nice long ride and out for dinner. We went up by way of Screw Auger Falls which we found very interesting. Then on up to Upton and the mountains to Errol and up to Dixfield Notch and around the Balsam Hotel. Back and had dinner at Errol and then home back through Wilson Mills and stopped on the way to look at the scenery. Came home, had lunch. Es and Cliff called and later Dorothea and Dave in a brand-new car. Oldsmobile. We all took a ride and enjoyed it very much. They were very pleased and we are glad for them.
