The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 23 - 26, 1973


Monday, April 23, 1973 horse, 70 to 75

A nice day. Betty went up to Joy’s and from there up to a Mrs. Shamon’s and there Betty bought a horse. Dorothea, Zak and I went. A black one. Betty bought her groceries. It has been another very nice mild day. Betty put the light up in the yard. Billie to bed early with his same old stomach trouble. One year ago today Kim to the Maine Medical Hospital for her heart operation.



Tuesday, April 24, 1973 got the Horse

Billie home sick today. He is very sick. Bill helped Betty to get the horse stall ready. They moved the chicks outside. In late p.m. Betty went to get the horse, her name is Ebony. She is black, looks like a very nice horse. Gentle and kind. They came home about 8 o’clock. I got supper down there. It seemed good to see the grass all green again.








Wednesday, April 25, 1973

A very nice sunny day. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. Bill down there working also. In p.m. Fern and Lloyd called. Billie to the DOCTOR. He has to go on a special diet tomorrow, the Dr. said his trouble could be a bowel infection or parasite. Betty’s chicks are doing very well. I worked down to Betty’s.



Thursday, April 26, 1973

Bill and I to Portland to see Jean. She wasn’t at all good. We called at Stan’s on the way home. Billie is on a special diet today to get ready for test etc. tomorrow.
