The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 9 - 11, 1973

Monday, July 9, 1973 HOT AND HUMID

Another very hot and humid day. I washed, did my kitchen refrigerator. Done regular work. Went down to Betty’s for a little while. She got a rake today to do the haying with. She had Billie D, Linda S, Nona S, Cathy S and Amy S and Carmen go and get it. Up to Rado’s. It was one Ervin Linscott had. They hauled it down the road. It was awful hot. Today they began putting the new culvert in over there to Rogers Brook. Walt home at noon or a little later. Linda Smith and Nona Smith rode on Ebony today. Billie hoeing garden. Esther and Phyllis called in evening.

Tuesday, July 10, 1973 PERMANENT, Bill worked

Another hot humid day but more cloudy than it has been. I shampooed my hair, went over to June’s and got a permanent. Came home, Zak here a little while. Then he and I went down to Betty’s a little while. Got supper and we went to town. I called at hospital to see Delores. She looked good. Billie finished hoeing corn.

Wednesday, July 11, 1973

A very nice day. I done up my work. About 11 AM Dorothea called on the phone. She was at Rudy’s. Betty went down to get her, she came up. After lunch we went over to see Bill Walker and he showed us his pictures of the old folks. Then came home and we got supper, then she, Carmen and I went down to her house and she took care of her cat and dog then came back and she stayed here all night.

At Bill Walker's
