The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 - 4, 1973 Jean back to NCMH

Tuesday, May 1, 1973 Billie still home sick

It was a nice sunny day. It seemed good to get outside. Bill worked at Betty’s. Made ramp for the horse to go in and out. Made a gate, painted a wall in her bedroom. I helped her to do some odds and end jobs. We picked greens. Had first mess of dandelion greens tonight. Billie didn’t work. He was very bad. Betty went down, got some medicine for him.

Wednesday, May 2, 1973 Jean came back to NCM

Cloudy when we got up. Today we did Betty’s cupboards in dining room and kitchen. Fern, Esther and I helped. Bill worked at Betty’s making gate etc. Today Jean came back from to the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital from the Mercy Hospital in Portland.

Thursday, May 3, 1973

A rainy cloudy dreary day. Sun came out occasionally. Fern and I worked at Betty’s. We did bookcase in living room, safe etc. Billie still home. He has a bad night last night. Gordon came up and got the radiator into the room down cellar. Bill worked there all day. Sally up to the hospital to see Jean. She was pretty good.

Friday, May 4, 1973 Billie back to work

Billie went back to work today. He still doesn’t feel too good. Weak and worried. I went to town. Betty took me. I did some odds and end things around here.
