The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 3 - 5, 1973 Fourth of July

Tuesday, July 3, 1973 HOT, Bill worked on barn

Well today we had some sun after the fog cleared in early forenoon. It was very hot and humid though. I worked at Betty’s. She mowed her lawns. Bill worked on the barn. Walt home early to help work on barn. Tonight Billie finished mowing and clipping his lawns. Bill went over the lawn again to smoothed it up, it was so tall after the heavy rains this past week. He also harrowed the garden. Hortons called after supper.

Wednesday, July 4, 1973 TOM HERE

It started out nice today. I done regular work, went to the parade with Betty and family. It was a very nice day during the parade but shower clouds came up and it began to rain. It RAINED. We had awful heavy rain showers, it washed out driveways, bridges, side of the roads. Over here to Rogers Brook Bridge it washed out and made great holes on the bridge. Today Tom called at Betty’s. He is a nice guy. He is quite upset about his children. He came last night. He has a new car. Has a nice job and doing well for himself.

Thursday, July 5, 1973 RAIN,DELORES TO THE NCM HOSPITAL

A miserable day. I done up my work. Bill worked a little while on the barn. Then came home, we went to town. Then later Billie and I went, we rode around to see where the roads washed out from the awful rain last night. Billie couldn’t work because of the awful rains. The building where he works still doesn’t have the roof on it since the fire. Today Delores entered the Northern Cumberland Hospital. She is in serious condition. One problem she is anemic. I called at Ferns tonight.
