The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 17 - 19, 1973


Tuesday, April 17, 1973 HOT, 70° and more

A very nice day, some light thin clouds occasionally. I made a pie, did my regular work. Lloyd up in a.m. Fern down to Betty’s. They did Fern’s bedding, later Betty and I went down to Fern’s and cleaned her beds for her. Bill worked down cellar. I helped a little. Kimmy down to Dorothea’s today and tonight. Carmen went to the Shrine Circus with her grade at school. Walt home at noon to do some more work. Billie feeling better this afternoon and tonight. Es and Cliff called in evening.



Wednesday, April 18, 1973 Beautiful day

Another very nice day. I done up the regular work. Down to Betty’s a little while. Then we came back up here. Bill worked downstairs. Dorothea came about 11:30 AM. She, Betty and Zak went to Norway. Kim came home from Dorothea’s with all kinds of new clothes. I washed windows on outside and did a dite of washing. A very nice day. In evening Bill, Betty, Kim and I to Portland to see Jean. She wasn’t as good as Sunday. Operation scheduled for tomorrow morning. We called at Dawn’s on the way home to see her floor covering.



Thursday, April 19, 1973 Jean, a beautiful day, 70 to 80°

Today Jean was operated on for a brain tumor at 8 AM at the Mercy Hospital in Portland Maine. It was found to be malignant. No chance at all. We are all concerned and feel bad. Betty, Kim, Zak and I over to North Windham and at Gorham to look at a horse. Bill worked at Betty’s. Billie home sick again. Joy called at Betty’s today. Carmen came home from Dorothea’s. She had some new clothes.
