The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 25 - 28, 1973

Monday, June 25, 1973 Bill worked at Walt’s

I done regular work. It was another mean day. Zak here today, he stayed here last night. He and I went to Portland to meet the bus Billie Deming came home from Brud’s. Bill still working and boarding up walls on the barn.

Tuesday, June 26, 1973

Another one of those awful bad days. It cleared in late p.m. Betty and I went down to Sebago and got some yellow Tiger lilies beside the road. Brought them home and set them out. I helped Betty in doing some washing.

Wednesday, June 27, 1973 Cloudy miserable day, Bill worked

It cleared off for a little while today. But in late p.m. it began to rain and has rained steady rest of p.m. and evening. I was down to Betty’s a little while. Around 5 PM Dorothea and Jeff came. We had a very good Kentucky Fried Chicken supper. They brought it up. It was so good. They made a nice visit. We called at Esther’s, Betty’s and Dolores’s. We bid Jeff goodbye, he leaves Friday for Michigan. Watergate is going strong, John Dean is reading his statement etc.

Early Birthday Party for Jeff

Thursday, June 28, 1973 Cloudy and foggy in a.m., very hot and humid, Bill worked

About 10 it cleared but still hot. Fern, Betty, Zak and I went to Norway. I done my regular work. Carmen and Kim up and Zak. I called at Betty’s a little while in p.m. It rained hard during the afternoon shower. AWFUL WEATHER. Kennard called at Betty’s in p.m. Walt home early, they got the roof of the barn started. Watergate hearing still on.
