The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 14 - 16, 1973 Billie Sick


Saturday, April 14, 1973 a very nice day, only 20 above this morning

This is been a very nice sunny day after over a week of cloudy cold snow and rain. I hope now we get some nice weather. Dorothea and Dave called. Dave took his car to the garage. Walt worked in a.m. Betty and children called. Kim here all night last night and today. Lloyd called. Bill down to Casco to get the material for the new room. Billie don’t feel too good today.



Sunday, April 15, 1973 A VERY GOOD DAY, Bill on DIET

A beautiful day. I done up regular work. Changed beds, washed sheets and pillow cases. Bill and I down to the Mercy Hospital to see Jean. She is improved in many ways. She knew us. We were there for about three quarters of an hour. Stan, his niece and her husband called. We stopped at Dorothea’s. Billie raked and in p.m. went with Lawrence. When he got home tonight he was very sick. Bill and I went up over the Ridge. Stopped at Esther’s, they were gone so we called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Betty up in evening a little while. Carlton and Phyllis came this afternoon for a little while.



Monday, April 16, 1973 Very nice day, Billie sick

Another beautiful day. Up early. Bill ate breakfast and down town. Gordon came up, he has a bad cold. Billie sick in bed, didn’t go to work. I did my washing. Lloyd called. Horton family all outside working. Bill worked downstairs. Walt didn’t have to work.
