The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 6 - 8, 1973

Friday, July 6, 1973 FIRST DAY AND NO Sun for months $50

It was a beautiful day. We DID NOT HAVE ANY RAIN today, first day for three months or more. I went down to Betty’s and she mowed her lawns. I did my washing this morning and took the ironing down there to do. Also did her washing and ironing. I came home and went to town. In evening I went to the fireworks with the Horton’s. Delores not too good today.

Saturday, July 7, 1973 ANOTHER HOT DAY

This has been another nice hot sunny day. There was a breeze which made it more comfortable. Two days in a row and no rain. Billie mowed the pasture over. Cleaned up the garden, finished fixing up his fence. Bill worked at Walt’s again on the barn. They got the side of the roof all boarded. I washed, ironed, made bread and rolls. Washed kitchen floor and regular work. Kim went home about noon. Carmen went swimming with the Smith girls in PM. Esther called a little while this evening.

Sunday, July 8, 1973 HOT

This is been a real hot scorching day. Bill and Walt worked on the barn. Got the roof boarded. I had a cold supper. Fern and Lloyd called this p.m. Billie painted the rest of his fence today. I washed. Hortons called in evening. The Adair family had a nice family get-together and birthday party for Jeffrey. Dorothea talked to Jeff and Mrs. Adair, Jeff’s grandmother. This is while Jeff is visiting his father in Michigan.
