The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, July 19, 1973 HOT

It came off hot and clear. I did my dishes, silverware, washed. Ironed, down to Betty’s. We made root beer. Cleaned up the cars tonight. Bill worked at Betty’s. They mowed lawns and Betty did also.

Friday, July 20, 1973 Walt 45 today, $50, MOWED HAY, BETTY AND GEORGE

Today I flew around and finished all my odds and end jobs. Betty very busy too. Went to town. Dorothea and Dave called. Kimmy up here. Bill worked at Betty’s. Got ready and left home at 7:15 PM to go to the airport to meet Betty and George. It has been a hazy day, but very hot and humid. Betty, Bill and I went, we picked up Dorothea, drove to the airport. It thundered and lightning and rained very hard. At 9:45 their plane came in. We was so glad to see them. They were tired. Dorothea came up to stay all night. We got home about 11:15 PM. Talked and had sandwiches etc. Had a good time. Dorothea down to Betty and Walt’s. Today Lawrence mowed Walt’s hay.

George and Betty Crook at Nanny's

Saturday, July 21, 1973

Up kind of early. It was cloudy and foggy. We had a late breakfast. I made bread and a chocolate layer cake. Washed. Got lunch and cooked a turkey. Betty and family, Dorothea and Dave came up. We all had a good time and enjoyed the meal etc. Dorothea enjoyed her visit down to Betty’s and very happy to be here with the family and to get a chance to visit George and Betty. Walt sick but better tonight. All went home late. We enjoyed the slides of Bill and my trip to Scotland.
