The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, April 28, 1973 Rain

It has rained awfully hard all day. It has been such a disgusting day. Lloyd called, Betty, Walt and kids called. Billie to the Dr. for the results of his x-rays, tests etc. It is diverticulitis and he has to watch his diet. Talked with Sal, she said Jean is getting weaker all the time. Billie thinks he is getting better today. He went away with Lawrence. Esther here in p.m. I did a dite of cooking. Baked beans, made rolls etc. The grass is all green around and getting real tall.

Sunday, April 29, 1973 Rain

Another miserable rainy day. It has rained hard all night and today. I done up regular work, took bath etc. Just sat around all day. In evening Betty called, Gordon and Sally. Billie away with Lawrence. They bought theirs and Betty’s fence posts. Also got Billie’s new heifer home.

Monday, April 30, 1973 Billie to work, DAYLIGHT TIME

This morning the sun came up. I got up kind of early. I did some washing. Betty, Zak, Dawn and I went to Portland. We saw Jean at the hospital. She is more alert than last time we saw her. Betty got some fence posts. After supper Billie and Walt hauled those Billie and Lawrence got yesterday. Esther over for the evening. It was kind of cold and raw today.
