The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 20 - 23, 1973


Sunday, May 20, 1973

A pretty nice day, mild and sunny. Bill finished the new room today. Billie and I cleaned up the cellar and we did a lot. I washed and washed, my bedroom curtains. Kim here today or this p.m. Bill and Billie mowed lawns today. Stan called. Lloyd called. Carmen and Betty went to a bridal shower.



Monday, May 21, 1973 Rain, Billie back to work

A mean, very hard rainy day. It was very heavy wind and rain when we got up this morning. Billie went back to work this morning, first time since the fire. I cleaned Billie’s bed and closet and the cupboards in the bathroom. Es came over tonight. She made the curtains for my new bedroom.



Tuesday, May 22, 1973

Partly cloudy, not but a dite of sunshine. Betty and I went over to Oxford to see Nancy then we came home and cleaned my two-bedrooms. They looked nice. We put the new curtain up down in the bedroom. I got my desk cleaned.




Wednesday, May 23, 1973 SUNNY, BEDS

When we got up this morning it was a beautiful day. I rushed around the did a wash. Done up my regular work. I went down to Betty’s while she took Zak down to the Humpty Dumpty School registration. I came home and got some work done on the bathroom. After dinner Betty came and we finished it. In p.m. the vet came to Betty’s and gave Ebony her shots. Also checked Lucky’s feet. In p.m. Betty had the two new beds come to for our room. They are very pretty. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill Walker and Phil Howard. Carmen called on her way home from school. In evening Billie and I sat out the narcissus Fern brought up. Also the Horton’s called. In p.m. Dawn called. I did my ironing after supper.
