The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 1 - 4, 1973

Wednesday, August 1, 1973

Partly cloudy. Some light rain. Didn’t do much today. In a.m. went down to Betty’s and looked at her photo albums. They enjoyed it all very much. Came home, I made preparations for supper. A happy surprise, Dorothea came and brought some goodies. She was here for supper. I’m glad she came. Also we had invited Stan to come. He seemed to enjoy his visit with everyone and supper. In evening Betty came up also. George and Betty seem to enjoy their visit here very much. Dorothea and Dave’s car is so pretty.

Thursday, August 2, 1973 RAIN

This has been a rainy day. George and Betty down town shopping. I did both refrigerators and washed floors. Kennard down to hospital for x-rays.

Friday, August 3, 1973 Very Hot

Went down to Douglas Hill in Sebago. Saw great sights and views etc. Up to the top of the hill and the guy took us all over the tower there. It was very interesting. Then we drove on down through to North Windham where Betty treated us to a McDonald’s hamburgers etc. This was all Betty treat to us. Came home, very hot. Bill and George mowed our lawns and Betty’s. Went to town shopping, had a late supper.

Saturday, August 4, 1973

Cloudy in a.m. but some sun during the day. We got up and got ready and went to Dorothea and Dave’s. Dave and Dorothea took us, Betty, George, Betty and I all over South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and out to Two Lights Park. We had a Kentucky fried chicken dinner given by Dorothea and Dave. We enjoyed being on the coast. We saw the tide come in. Then we drove on out to Old Orchard Beach and home. We had another nice day etc. Came home, had baked beans supper at Betty and Walt’s.
