The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 3 - 6, 1973 School Begins


Monday, September 3, 1973 HOT

Another very hot day. I did my washing. We sat out under the pine tree where it was cool and a breeze. Kim called. Had lunch out there. In late p.m. went for a ride. Billie with Lawrence. Down to Betty’s in evening for a outside lunch. Very nice. The Thomas family there, was glad to see Jeff.



Tuesday, September 4, 1973 Cooler

It was quite hot early this morning but got cooler. Got ready, went to Portland to do grocery shopping and a few other things. Came home, got supper. Es and Cliff called also Zak and Betty. Kids got ready for school.



Wednesday, September 5, 1973 SCHOOL BEGAN, cooler, cloudy and rain in late p.m.

I got up early, got part of my work done and went down to Betty’s to see Carmen and Kimberly go to school for the first day. They looked so nice. Very pretty clothes and good-looking girls. They were so pleased and happy. Zak goes next week to playschool. Bill worked at Betty’s today. I ironed, did the two refrigerators, ironed etc. Went to town. Esther went too.









Thursday, September 6, 1973 RAIN, Bill worked at the Helen Jones cottage

It was cloudy when we got up. It began to rain about noon and we had a very heavy rain shower. Cleared about suppertime. In the evening they had a fire at Camp Woodlands. Bill worked at the Jones cottage today. Betty and I went to Norway and Oxford.
