The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 7 - 9, 1973

Sunday, October 7, 1973

A dite cloudy when we got up. It cleared and a nice day. Milan and family, Walt and family and me all went for a ride up to Cold River. It was a beautiful place where we ate. It was at a man-made lake. A lot of people there. Then we went on up through Evans Notch. Down through Bethel, home. Milan and Betty called at Walt’s in evening. Billie done some more cleaning up and preparing for fall. Also had a large load of manure hauled for the garden, flowers etc. When we got home Betty and Walt had company.



Monday, October 8, 1973 very mild, hot

I washed. Washed kitchen floor. Cleaned up the car. Betty and I. Kim here all day. Today Lloyd was operated on for bad veins in his leg. Betty, Esther and Fern were with him all day. A serious operation. Milan and Betty over to Fryeburg and New Hampshire. Norma and Regina went over to Susan’s for the day and supper. I made a custard pie for supper and baked a roast beef. Kimmy had a good day here all by herself. This is Columbus Day, first time it was observed here. Some stores closed, schools etc. Columbus Day is October 12 but it was the holiday today so it could make a long weekend.



Tuesday, October 9, 1973

A beautiful day. I done some washing. Betty and Milan called on her nieces and sisters. Betty, Norma, kids and I to Portland. Done some shopping. Fern to Portland. Lloyd had another operation today. He had blood clots in his leg. In evening Milan, Betty and I down to Betty’s. We listened to tapes of Mama, Uncle Lewis and Aunt Ava. Also saw Norma’s movies she brought. Had a good time. Rayburn and family was there.
