The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 25 - 28, 1973

Thursday, October 25, 1973 Carmen got glasses, Bill worked at Betty’s

Cloudy. Some light rain. I done regular work, made a pie. Down to Betty’s in p.m. We cleaned Zak’s room. Fern didn’t go to Portland today. Last night and today this country was on alert and many bases of this country. A threat from Russia. All Army bases were set up for a instant take off. Betty, Esther and I also Billie called at Fern’s tonight. Carmen got new glasses today, the are strong lenses. Her eyes were quite bad.

Friday, October 26, 1973 cloudy

I finished my kitchen cleaning. Got most of it done a couple days ago. I went down to Betty’s while she went to Portland with Fern and Esther. Lloyd not too good. I washed for her and washed the windows outside. Went to town before supper. It cleared off nice before supper.

Saturday, October 27, 1973

A nice sunny day but very windy and cold. I done regular work. Made bread. I went down and helped Betty washed her storm windows. We went to Fryeburg to exchange shoes for Carmen. Kids all went to the church Halloween party. Billie and Lawrence hauled the cows home from the pastures. Lloyd walked with walker today. I finished washing all my windows today, also washed clothes.

Sunday, October 28, 1973 a nice day, Bill worked.

A nice sunny day, on the cool side. Bill worked at Walt’s. They finished the corral. Put the storm windows on. I washed, ironed, did regular work. Billie went with Lawrence down country to get cows. Zak up today. I gave him a bath and shampoo. Betty and I went to Maine Medical Center to get Fern. She has been staying down to Dorothea’s for the past few days to be with Lloyd.
