The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 2 - 4, 1973

Friday, November 2, 1973 Clear and cooler

I done some washing down to Betty’s a little while. Didn’t do any work. Her house looks very nice. Eve went to town and took Fern to do her shopping. Carmen came up here and stayed all night. A nice day.

Saturday, November 3, 1973 clear and windy, Bill worked

Very windy and cold. Bill worked at Walt’s. Billie cleaned up Lloyd’s lawn mower and ours. Also the garage too. I done washing, ironing, cooking etc. Zak here while Betty helped out at the barn. Zak has a cold. Carmen went home early. Kim and Betty brought up the hose for the water. Fern went to Portland to see Lloyd. He wasn’t in very good spirits. He didn’t get up but once.

Sunday, November 4, 1973

Still windy. I didn’t get up till 8 AM, got breakfast, did up regular work. Billie went with Lawrence. I shampooed my hair and put on a rinse. Bill and I went for a ride. Betty took Fern and Esther to Portland to see Lloyd. He was walking pretty good. Seemed pretty good. Betty and Zak called after supper. We with Esther called at Ferns. She is in pretty good spirits. This is been a very cold day and very cold tonight. Kim and Carmen not too well, they have colds and couldn’t go to church or Sunday School. Zak was better.
