The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 25 - 28, 1973


Tuesday, September 25, 1973

A nice day. I washed, went down to Betty’s. Bill down there working etc. Zak went to school. I went when she went to pick him up. I went down and stayed late in p.m. while Betty and Walt rode.



Wednesday, September 26, 1973 Bill worked, cattle went

A beautiful day. Bill worked at Walt’s. Betty, Zak and I went to Norway. Later in p.m. she took her cat to the vets. Had to have stitches taken. Don’t know how she got the hole in her stomach. The cattle and Walt’s went tonight.



Thursday, September 27, 1973 hayrack ride, Zak to school

A nice mild day. I went down to Betty’s. We washed and I dried my bedspreads down there. In p.m. went to town. Later in p.m. Robert called. Bill, Christie and I went for a ride. Robert brought us some potatoes he got in Aroostook County. Tonight Carmen Christie, Kimberly Allie and Walter Ambrose IV all went for a hayrack ride with the Sunday School class. Bill didn’t work. Zak to school today. Betty got ducklings today at Rufus Eldred in Harrison.



Friday, September 28, 1973 Nice day, Bill worked at Walt’s

Sunny and windy today. Bill worked at Walt’s. I done regular work. Washed, Mop and Glo my kitchen floor. I went down to Betty’s a little while. She cleaned up her barn. No school, teachers convention. Carmen and Kim rode. Dawn called at Betty’s. I went to town shopping with Betty. Ken and Delores called down to Betty’s. This is been a very cold windy day.
