The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 22 - 24, 1973

Monday, October 22, 1973 LLOYD GOOD

A very nice sunny day. A heavy frost when we got up. Done regular work. Got ready. Betty, Esther, Fern, Dot and I all went to Portland to see Lloyd. He was much better. Like his old self. We all were so pleased. No school or work for some banks and stores closed in observance of Armistice Day of November 11.

Tuesday, October 23, 1973 a nice mild day

A very nice day. I worked in the kitchen. Betty and I up to Conway after we got Zak to school. She bought the kids some jackets. Irma took Fern to see Lloyd today. He still isn’t too good. He has all open wound or cut which don’t heal very good. He has to stay in bed. A nice mild day. Bill down to Betty’s working.

Wednesday, October 24, 1973 nice day, very mild. Bill worked at Walt’s. Norma and Regina left for home

I finished my housecleaning for this fall. I will do the garage windows first chance I get. The house looks real good for the coming of winter. Got a call from Betty Smith. Norma and Regina return home today to San Francisco by plane. I had Zak. Betty took Fern to Portland to see Lloyd. He is kind of discontented. He wants to get home. Bill done odds and end jobs. He got ready to build the corral.
