The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 11 - 14, 1973 ZACK TO SCHOOL


Tuesday, September 11, 1973 ZACK TO SCHOOL, Bill worked at Walt’s, sunny and mild

This is been a nice mild day. Today Zak started Humpty Dumpty School. He wore a purple shirt, light tie, white belt and a pair dark blue pants. He looks so nice. He liked it very much. Betty and I took him down. I helped Betty change her clothes over from summer to winter. I did a dite of washing. It was at the Congo church. Zak’s school is. Billie put his corral up today. Fern sick today.









Wednesday, September 12, 1973

A nice day. I did washing and ironing. Betty called. I done some tomatoes and in evening Esther was over. She helped me get some cukes ready. Bill worked at Betty’s.



Thursday, September 13, 1973

I done my regular work, canned my sweet cuke pickles. I did some ironing. Zak was here for a little while. He went to school. I went with Betty to take him and get him. Called at Fern’s in evening.



Friday, September 14, 1973 $25.00

Today I made some more pickles. Done regular housework. Went to Norway with Betty and she took me shopping. Bill worked at Betty’s. Billie didn’t do much. He has had a relaxing vacation.
