The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 14 - 17, 1973

Sunday, October 14, 1973 Windy again

A very nice day. Billie worked up to Chet’s sawing wood. Betty didn’t go to Portland, first day for a week. I didn’t do too much. A little washing, also did some ironing. Cooked a chicken for supper. Fern went to Portland with Esther and Cliff. Lloyd was much better. I guess he will now began to gain.

Monday, October 15, 1973 mild, some wind

A beautiful day. We got ready and went to Portland with Betty and Fern. Bill went in to see Lloyd, he was much better. He was very glad see Bill. We went out to the Maine Mall. Betty got some sleepers for Zak. We got the sealer for the cover of the deep-freeze.

Tuesday, October 16, 1973 Meat Home Tonight

Partly cloudy but yet a lot of sunshine. I did a big wash. It dried good. I cleaned my room. Billie brought the meat home tonight from the store where it had been frozen for the deep-freeze. Esther and Fern got theirs too. Bill didn’t do much, he defrosted the deep-freeze. Betty called. We are real pleased about Lloyd’s improvements. Some heavy clouds and we got some rain showers. Thena called.

Wednesday, October 17, 1973 Bill worked at Walt’s

A nice day, not too cold. I washed, did Billie’s room and the blue bathroom. I was down to Betty’s a little while. She and Esther were making applesauce. In evening Billie and I took Dorothea and David’s meat down to them. Jeff is working. Billie, Dorothea and I went into the hospital to see Lloyd. He wasn’t as good as he was Monday. His mind was getting bad again. I hope that won’t last long. Hope Fern finds him better tomorrow. Fern went down to see him today with Barbara Pike.
