The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 18 - 21, 1973


Thursday, October 18, 1973 Carmen had eye exam


Fern to Portland with Irma. Esther and Delores went. Lloyd was very bad. I cleaned the living room. Done a wash and a lot of odds and end jobs. Bill down to Betty’s working.



Friday, October 19, 1973

Another nice day. Fern, Betty and I went to Portland. Lloyd not too good but better than yesterday. I didn’t get my kitchen done as I had planned.



Saturday, October 20, 1973

A little rain. I done my regular work. I did a dite of cleaning in kitchen, defrosted refrigerator. Kimmy up today. Betty took Fern to Portland to see Lloyd, he was some improved. Walt worked around home. Carmen came home from her overnight scout camping trip over to Knight’s Hill to. Billie went with Lawrence to get some cattle from the pasture. I did a dite of cooking. Fern here for supper and Esther down to Ferns. Billie, Kim and I over to Norway with Billie. It rained.



Sunday, October 21, 1973

A nice sunny day. I done my regular work. Zak called after Sunday School. I did a big ironing. Then went down to Betty’s. She, Esther and I made Italian sandwiches. Fern came and Dorothea and David and Cliff. We had the sandwiches, ice cream and cake for Fern’s 71st birthday. She got a few gifts. Barbara Pike took Fern to Portland to see Lloyd. He was still very good but got very tired. Cathy Smith here this weekend. She and Carmen rode the horses. Dorothea and Dave called in a little while from Betty’s. Billie and Keith sawed rest of the wood at Chet’s.
