The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 22 - 24, 1973

Saturday, September 22, 1973

Cloudy and rain began about 11 AM. I done my regular work. Made bread, rolls, a chocolate layer cake. I baked white beans. Went to town in a.m. Fern, Lloyd up for supper. Norma, Jim and Regina down to Betty and Walt all day. Jim rode on Ebony in a.m. Bill went with Lawrence.

Sunday, September 23, 1973 Fair, Showers

It was foggy when we got up in a.m. It cleared and the sun came out. I done regular work, changed the beds, washed some clothes, bedding etc. Got ready and went over to Esther’s. Carmen was here and she went too. We helped her to get ready for the cookout. Yates, Thomases, Hortons, Knicks, Crooks and later the Ragers. Had a good dinner and a good time. Came home and they got Regina to bed then they went down to Betty’s (Jim and Norma). Everyone likes Jim and thinks Regina is a doll. Billie went with Lawrence. They rode the horses today.

Monday, September 24, 1973 NORMA, JIM AND REGINA LEFT

It was a cloudy forenoon but I did a wash. Betty was up this forenoon. Cleared in p.m. Bill didn’t work. Norma and family didn’t leave until about 11 AM. She has a nice family.
