The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 30 - September 2, 1973


Thursday, August 30, 1973 KILLED HENS

I got my work done up early and went down to Betty’s. Dawn, Esther and Fern were there also Carol, Dawn’s adopted girl. We did all the hens. Bill chopped the heads off. Got them all done by noon. I came home, got lunch. Moved the play house. Bobbie Ridlon did it with his tractor.




Friday, August 31, 1973 very hot, Bill home till Tuesday, $25

I got my work done, went down to Betty’s and she and Bill mowed lawns. I helped her to get her house cleaned up. Worked there till p.m. I washed a dite here at home. Also did washing down to Betty’s. Bill didn’t do much at Walt’s today, too hot. She got the barn cleaned also. I went to town shopping this p.m. Betty shopped too. Billie home till Tuesday, long weekend.



Saturday, September 1, 1973

Another hot day. Carmen here this morning. She watched TV. Called on Zenya a little while. I cooked a little. Billie called on a friend down to Raymond, Danny Brown. I went to town. We have had showers this evening. It cooled off a little.



Sunday, September 2, 1973 HOT

Another very hot day. I didn’t get up too early. Done up regular work. Cooked a fowl we kill down to Betty’s last week. Carmen and Kim here today. Bill, Betty, Walt and Zak gone away looking at doves. I wrote to Betty Smith and George and Betty.
